The photo on the book cover of ” Any Budding Sailors” – my memoir. It was taken on the coal burning SS HAZELBANK en route from Fremantle to Colombo in 1951.
I spent the last two years of my apprenticeship aboard the Hazelbank ( 1955 – 1957 ), the last 6 months as uncertificated 3rd Mate. After a 2 year voyage this vessel was delivered to new Dutch owners in Amsterdam in 1959.
This Hazelbank was a coal burner with little Nav AIDS other than a Standard Compass and DF ( no radar) and I can recall that the voyage up the Englisg Channel to Amsterdam in thick fog was a bloody nightmare.
