Bob Blowers gives a superb account of his career as Mate and Master on these vessels where you certainly had little time to relax. I remember well coming through the Dover strait in thick fog before lane routing and encountering these ferries as they crossed hopefully giving way if they had to. I was on VLCCs and lane routing was a godsend.
Ship handling in these vessels is not for the faint hearted and I am not sure if I would have liked the job. I had a months trial as an officer on a ferry which ran between Lerwick and Aberdeen another demanding route with its own problems.
